Final project proposal

Having so much experience with journaling these past few months has helped me realize just how important personal journals are as writing artifacts. I definitely plan to continue practicing journaling, but sometimes I find the hardest part is just sitting down to write in the first place. I believe I’ve come up with a fun and different way to get my creative juices flowing - by creating a “journal jar” filled with random thoughts and ideas to start as a jumping off point for future journals.
I suppose it would be correct to say I'm trying to recycle my journals. There have to be thoughts in there that I can dig a little deeper into.I plan to analyze my past journal entries and utilize ideas that I could expand upon more in future journals. I also have a ton of questions that I’ve asked throughout my past journal entries, questions which I’ve never found answers to, which could also be used as ideas for future journals. Silly random thoughts and words will also be collected in the jar - maybe the rest of the class would like to contribute as well! That would be pretty cool.

I also want to incorporate my past journal entries into the design of my jar. Hopefully I can use a sharpie or something to write the first and last lines of each journal entry to make one long poem that I can write around the outside of the jar. Plus the additions of other little crafty things to make it more personal.
Maybe you guys can help me out!

I would love to have some of your ideas to use for future journal entries!

  1. Marissa, what an awesome idea! I often feel that a way to expand my journal thoughts and ideas would be helpful. I love the idea of writing the poem along the outside as well.

  2. This is so cool :) I would be so down to contribute in any way I can. I think this is a great way to segway into or cope with not finding time to journal in the first place because it can come in sections. I sense you really want to do this too so I say go for it!

  3. I like this idea because it's not just a project that you'll create and then it's over with. You can actually use this throughout your life if you decide that journaling is your thing and you want to keep doing it. It would be cool if the rest of the class wanted to contribute as well, it would be such a simple way of helping you out with your project, too.

  4. I really like this idea! I think it would be cool to have other people contribute their thoughts to it as well so there's a variety of journal ideas to choose from. I also like the idea of having something personal decorating the jar since you'll be keeping it for awhile :)

  5. Kick-ass ideas! I love how the past helps fuel the future of your journal. It literally is the fuel for future entries.

This idea also made me think of William Burroughs' "cut-up" technique. While he didn't invent the technique he certainly made it famous. Essentially, he would take his old writing and then cut it up. Then randomly reassemble the words. The rearranged words would somehow express ... something. Either imposed by the viewer's subconscious or synchronicity the new arrangement wold take on meaning / order. Weird stuff that he used to do with audio, too.

  6. Marissa,

Looking back at past entries to dig even deeper is a really profound thought—good for you. I’m impressed.

The “journal jar” is cool and catchy. How would you get the words/phrases/language in there? To me, tearing out the pages of old journals seems… horrifying (I like to keep everything tidy and preserved and perfect, if possible). Would you photocopy previous entries? Pull out common themes/threads and then copy/paste them onto flashcards or something?

If you can think of other JTP possibilities (remember, I asked for 3), it might help you to consolidate your ideas into one big super-project. That said, I like where you’re heading with this one. It’s very outside the box.

  9. I like this idea for the same reasons as Linda, this project isn't just finished but it continues. I would love to contribute! Along with copies of old journals maybe throw in small pictures or titles of videos that make your mind wander. I like this idea because there are so many options. Hope it all works out Marissa!

  10. Marissa,
I really like how you want to ‘re purpose’ or dig deeper with your journal. It shows that you really are reflecting and using past experiences or thoughts from your past journal entries to squeeze more out it! Great idea. It sort of reminds me of our activity in class a week ago where the emphasis was to dissect universal themes---we came up with all kinds of stuff! I’m sure when you go back to your journal entries you will find that there is so much more to get from them, again cool idea!
